      SCANNING GUIDE
The following guidelines are designed to help you scan your own images so that the Graphics Department will be able to use the files sent to us without having to rescan anything.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT SCANNING?
When scanning an image, the final resolution needed is a very important factor to consider. The input resolution for digital inkjet prints must be at a minimum of 72dpi at the final size. For Lambda prints, the minimum resolution needs to be 100 dpi at the final size. If an image has a resolution that falls below either of these minimums, the Graphics Department will be able to print the graphic, but the quality will be reduced. Low-resolution files can give the final product a grainy, pixilated, or fuzzy appearance. In order for the Graphics Department to produce the highest quality image, please consider the following:
• If your file is not at full size, make sure that the input resolution is high enough so that when the file is at final size, the resolution will be at or above the minimum for the particular process you will be using.
• If an image is created at full size (Final Size) then the resolution needs to be either 72 dpi for digital inkjet graphics or 100 dpi for Lambda graphics. A higher resolution is all right, but not necessary, as this will only increase the file size and the amount of memory needed to transport and open the image.

WHAT RESOLUTION SHOULD MY IMAGES BE SCANNED AT?
To achieve the highest quality for your digital inkjet or Lambda print, use the following formula for help determine the scanning resolution that will be needed.

Height + Width (final image size)          x 72 (digital inkjet) OR 100 (Lambda) = ? dpi
Height + Width (original image size)

Example:
90 + 118     x 72 (digital inkjet) OR x 100 (Lambda)
4+5

208     x 72 (digital inkjet) OR x 100 (Lambda)
9

23.1     x 72 (digital inkjet) =1,664 dpi OR x 100 (Lambda) 2.310 dpi

WHAT CAN I SEND FOR THE GRAPHICS DEPARTMENT TO SCAN?
The Graphics Department can scan artwork such as: photographs, clean black and white or colored art, negatives, slides, and transparencies. The drum scanner is used for highly detailed images and images that are being enlarged quite a bit. Images that are to be drum scanned need to be flexible and no larger than 8" x 10". The flatbed scanner can scan photographs and clean black and white or colored artwork. Transparencies cannot be flatbed scanned. The largest image that can be scanned on the flatbed scanner is 8.5" x 14" and the highest resolution is 600 dpi.

• If you are sending a negative that will need to be scanned, please send a positive for color matching. If the Graphics Department does not have a supplied color-matching guide, they will ad just the colors to be most pleasing to the eye.
